We are really looking forward to seeing our Burning River All-Stars skate against Tri-City Roller Girls this Friday at 10am!  Here is some tournament information for you!  Also – if you haven’t made a donation to our Burning River All-Stars fund – there is still time!    Thank you to everyone who has made a contribution!!!
All bouts will be webcast live from WFTDA.tv. Kzoo is in the Eastern time zone, so there won’t be the annoying time conversions that D2 watchers had to deal with last weekend.
This is probably the easiest place to find quick schedule info and game scores as the tournament progresses.

This is the tournament home page on WFTDA.com. It has the tourney bracket with game times, seeding information, etc.
Anybody who’s interested in some friendly sports betting can enter the Bracket Bonanza with their predictions of tournament results. Winners get some prizes, but it’s also fun to see what other people have entered and do a little friendly competition with people you know.

Well, you’ve been tapped.  We’ve sent you a personal message.  Go check it.  It’s your time to see what you are made of – TRYOUTS!

Yes.  You’ve been thinking about it.  You’ve been working out.  You’ve been talking to others.  You are probably watching D2 playoffs right now and have filled out all of the Cheeseball Brackets.  Because you want to change your life.  And that’s what skating does: it changes your life.

We all come to roller derby for different reasons.  Some people want to get in shape.  Some people are looking for friends.  Some people want to challenge themselves to leave the house again.  Whatever the reason – now is your chance.

Tryouts are on Wednesday August 21 from 6:45 pm to 10:00 pm.  All the details can be found on our facebook event page.

So – what are you waiting for?  Live your life without regrets.  Live your life as if you don’t have this chance again.  What do you have to lose?

Huge hits, lead changes galore and a tied game that went into overtime — if you weren’t at the Burning River Roller Girls’ third home team bout, you missed out on one heck of an exciting night of roller derby.

The third double-header of the home season kicked off with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem by our very own West Nel Virus of the Cleveland Steamers and William Maullace, ref extraordinaire.

Then the skaters took the track for a fast-paced game pitting the Rolling Pin-Ups against last year’s Hazard Cup champs the Hellbombers. The Pin-Ups took the lead early and kept it for most of the game until the Bombers caught up toward the tail end of the second half.  At the end of the last jam, the score was tied meaning the game went into the rare unicorn that is the overtime jam! (A quick refresher for those who haven’t seen it in a while — in overtime, the jam goes the full two minutes and there is no lead jammer.) Despite a hard fight and a star pass from Pin-Up jammer …ooohSHINEE!, the Bombers pulled it off and won 154 to 149. MVPs were Mary Kaos (MVP Jammer) and Sparkles (MVP Blocker) for the Bombers, and Lulu (MVP Jammer) and x-TRON-x(MVP Blocker) for the Pin-Ups.

After the half time entertainment (the otherworldly sounds of a musical saw player) and a brief delay while helmet covers were procured, the Hard Knockers faced off against the Cleveland Steamers in the second bout of the evening. Despite a quick lead by the Steamers, the girls in pink snatched it away by the half.  It was a revolving door in the penalty box as both team’s jammers took turns sitting for a minute for much of the second half, but the Knockers never let that lead close and took the win 158 to 114. MVPs were Premo Donna (MVP Jammer) and Vendetta Farfalle (MVP Blocker) for the Knockers, and CupQuake (MVP Jammer) and Buddhalicious (MVP Blocker) for the Steamers.

After all that, you’re dying to know the Semi-finals match-ups now, right? Since this bout’s outcomes resulted in a three-way tie between the Knockers, Bombers and Pin-Ups, score differentials were used as the tiebreaker. The Semi-finals, on June 22 at the Ohio Nets Sports Complex, will be game one: the Hard Knockers (3rd place) vs. the Hellbombers (2nd place), and game two: the Rolling Pin-Ups (1st place) vs. the Cleveland Steamers (4th place.)   Get your tickets here!!! Winners from each game go skate to skate for the Hazard Cup in our Championship bout. Will the Knockers beat the Bombers for a second time this season and go on to the Championship for the first time since our first season? Can the Steamers sink the competition and pull an upset on the Pin-Ups? You’ll just have to be there this Saturday,  June 22 to find out.

This could be you … but you’ll never know unless you try.

You’ve thought about joining roller derby. You’ve thought of going to a bootcamp or a tryout for the Burning River Roller Girls.

But you talked yourself out of it.

You’re not athletic enough, you say. Not strong enough. Fast enough. Young enough. Old enough. You don’t have the right look. You have kids. You’re a single mom. You’re in school. You’re not alt or edgy enough. You don’t like tattoos. You’re too skinny. You’re too big. You’re too short. Too tall. You live too far away. You have health problems. You work two jobs. You’re never going to be as good as so-and-so.

You’re scared.

We get it. But don’t let that stop you.

The Burning River Roller Girls is hosting it’s 4th boot camp Sunday, June 2, leading up to tryouts this summer. Click here for all the details.

Here’s what we require for you to participate:

1. Are you a woman 18 years of age or older?
2. Do you have the required gear or can you borrow it?
3. Do you have basic skating skills?
4. Do you have a passion to learn roller derby and work hard at it?

Yes? That’s all we need from you. Forget everything else. We have women in our league or know women who play derby elsewhere who are JUST LIKE YOU. If you have the drive to make this work, we can help you. We can put you in touch with women who understand your situation, and who can share how she has overcome those obstacles, too.

Of course derby isn’t for everyone. But our bootcamps are an excellent way to find out if this is a good fit for you and your lifestyle and an opportunity to start connecting with women who understand the challenges of balancing a life and doing something you love.

Can’t make it June 2? Still scared? Please get on our recruiting email list. Our Recruiting Director Soul Eater is a wealth of information about what to expect and how to prepare to be a derby player. Email her at recruiting@burningriverrollergirls.com.

Still not convinced? Come to our bout on Saturday night!  Get your tickets here!  See what it’s all about!

Burning River Travel Team Update!

In case you haven’t noticed, the BRRG travel teams have been kicking butts
left and right this season. Mother’s Day weekend was no exception. On Saturday, the Burning River All Stars pulled

allstar5

off a win against the Tallahassee RollerGirls, 237 to 142, at BRRG’s home the Ohio Nets Sports Complex. The HazMat Crew followed suit, beating the Eerie Roller Girls 189 to 116. On Mother’s Day,

allstars3

BRRG made our mommas proud by taking down the Fort Wayne Derby Girls at the Roll Arena in Elyria. The All Stars won 240 to 159 while the HazMat Crew came out ahead, 257 to 130. While the All Stars didn’t win during their closed-to-the-public bout versus the Demolition City Dynamite Dolls on

May 19 (final score 189 to 78), you can bet they’re already hard at work preparing to take down their next opponents when they play Queen City Roller Girls in Buffalo, NY on June 15. If you’re looking for a road trip, they’d love to see some friendly faces there or at this season’s final travel team games against NEO Roller Derby’s A and B teams at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge, on July 13.

Perhaps the best way to support local roller derby is by donating to our page on Go Fund Me.   BRRG skaters are not paid to skate and all this travel can take a toll on our wallets. Any little bit you can contribute will go to sending the Burning

allstar4

River All Stars to away bouts, necessary for competitive rankings within the WFTDA. Thanks to all our fans for your

support!
